MAMS Math Club Reaches Gold Level of MATHCOUNTS Program

Eighth grade MAMS Math Club members Emily Atunca, Charley Carnes, Jack Doran, and Elise Freeman ended their last year of middle school by achieving the Gold Level in the National MATHCOUNTS Program and also making the MATHCOUNTS Gold Level Honor Roll.

MATHCOUNTS provides engaging math programs to middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes about math and problem solving.

To reach Gold Level Status, the club members created a video explaining a particular math concept used in MATHCOUNTS competitions. Their video explained how to solve factorials, used for probability in Math. They then created even more difficult problems to include in the video, and showed shortcuts of how to solve the problems quickly.

The team, under the direction of Mr. Mark Mohar, MATHCOUNTS coach and MAMS math teacher, was one of only eight middle schools from Pennsylvania and 117 middle schools nationally to reach Gold Level status for completing their project. In addition to their Gold Level recognition, the team’s project was selected as one of the nine best projects in the country, placing them on the MATHCOUNTS Gold Level Honor Roll.

Congratulations again Emily, Charley, Jack and Elise! We are proud of your hard work and dedication to the MATHCOUNTS program and for sharing your math problem solving skills!
