Parent AlertTuesday, November 3, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians of K-12 Student Athletes:

This communication is sent on behalf of the District’s school and athletic team physician, Dr. Jayson Loeffert of Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Dr. Loeffert has advised that any student athlete under 18 years of age who has tested positive for COVID-19 with symptoms lasting longer than three (3) days be referred to their Primary Care Provider (PCP) for an electrocardiogram (ECG) before returning to play sports. This recommendation is based on medical advice from the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) which has been studied by the Penn State Hershey medical team. The purpose of the ECG is to assess potential cardiac issues in student-athletes who have been infected with COVID-19 to prevent sudden cardiac arrest. Since COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus, there is still much that is unknown about the long-term effects on persons who have been infected. The ECG serves as an additional piece of medical information for your child’s doctor to determine whether s/he is cleared to return to active play.

In addition to a doctor’s note required for return-to-play after a student-athlete has tested positive for COVID-19, the District may provide you with the document below to share with your child’s Primary Care Provider (PCP) which contains the protocol for determining whether an electrocardiogram (ECG) is needed.

Thank you in advance for your assistance,
