Ben Staker always loved to write, even in elementary school, but it wasn’t until he was in eighth grade when his English teacher, Mrs. Alison Chambers, acknowledged his gift of writing, that he realized he might actually have a future in it.

The Hummelstown Sun has given Ben the opportunity to explore his writing passion. Due to his interest in sports journalism, Ben is assigned the task of gathering the standings for local sports teams. In addition, Ben wrote a published story about an area grad who is launching her music career. Ben is also learning the Associated Press (AP) Style of writing which he believes will help him be ahead of the curve in college. It has become such a habit he even finds himself texting in AP style!

Ben’s advice to underclassmen who are considering an internship is, “First, make sure your grades are going well and stay on top of your schoolwork. Internship gives you a chance to go out and experience something you might want to do.”

Ben says that his experience at The Sun has solidified that he’s on the right track. He hopes to major in journalism and possibly minor in communications. In the meantime, he’s enjoying learning from the editor of The Sun as he shadows him on assignments and gets a jump start on his life after high school.
