At the School Board meeting on April 20, 2021, the Board of School Directors accepted the retirement of Mr. Carnes after his 19 years of service in the District. A few weeks later on May 8, Mr. Carnes walked across the stage at Millersville University to receive his Doctorate in Education.

MAHS graduate, Dr. Michael P. Carnes began his tenure at MASD in 2002 in the position of School Counselor at MAMS. In 2009 he transitioned to the High School to take on the role of Career Counselor, then moved to Assistant Principal in 2012, and a year later became the MAHS Principal. He has also worn the hats of baseball coach, Peer Helpers Advisor, Guidance Department Chairman, and Link Crew Advisor.

Dr. Carnes has truly left a mark in the history of Middletown Area School District, especially in the development and implementation of the Career Pathways Program which is used as a model for other school districts. Dr. Carnes will be relocating to Wyoming where he can enjoy his love of the outdoors while continuing to make a difference in the lives of students in his role as principal at a Wyoming high school.
