Letter from Dr. SuskiFriday, September 11, 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian:

As we close this second 4-day week of the 2020-21 school year, I want to express my deepest gratitude to our MASD teachers, support staff and administrators who are working tirelessly to see that your children have the best possible educational experience during this unprecedented time. The cohorts at the secondary level and the scaffolded model at the elementary level have allowed us to achieve the recommended social distancing of 6 feet between students in each classroom. Our students are doing an outstanding job wearing their face coverings and keeping their hands clean. The extra vigilance by students and staff has kept our schools COVID-19-free since school began on August 31, 2020.

2020 has presented many challenges for all of us as we have learned to adapt to the ever-changing world of the COVID-19 pandemic. Your patience and support has been greatly appreciated as we’ve worked together to resolve technological issues and get students situated to begin this new school year experience. In the words of Socrates, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” As we prepare to transition into our third week of instruction with our first full week of school, I would like to take this opportunity to announce some voluntary, administrative changes that will take effect on September 30, 2020:

Mr. Kevin Cook, MAMS Principal, will become the Raider Academy Principal and Director of Transportation. As the first principal in MASD to lead the 1:1 technology initiative in 2012, Mr. Cook is eager to take on this new challenge as our Raider Academy cyber program has grown from 90 students in 2019-20 to over 400 students in 2020-21. Additionally, Mr. Cook will oversee transportation for MASD, a role that he held over 20 years ago when he was an Assistant Principal at Feaser Middle School. Mr. Cook is looking forward to these new challenges as we continue to grow our online community of learners K-12 and develop greater efficiency with our transportation.

Mr. Christopher Sattele, MAMS Assistant Principal, will become the new Middle School Principal. Mr. Sattele has served as a Social Studies teacher, Dean of Students and Assistant Principal at MAMS/Feaser for the past 18 years. Mr. Sattele has done an excellent job assisting Mr. Cook over the past 8 years and is willing and ready to make the next move to the principal’s office. The District is excited to grow the Middle School under Mr. Sattele as he leads several new MAMS initiatives aimed at meeting individual student social and emotional needs, developing restorative practices, and increasing student achievement.

Mr. Earl Bright, Raider Academy Principal and Director of Transportation, will become the new MAMS Assistant Principal. Mr. Bright is an experienced elementary principal who took on a new role four years ago as principal of the former Middletown Academy alternative education program as well as Raider Academy. Over the past 19 years, Mr. Bright has worked with K – 5 and 6 – 12 students and is looking forward to his new role working with the middle level teachers and students of Grades 6 – 8. His former experience leading Positive Behavior Intervention Support at Reid Elementary School and his skill in building relationships with students and parents will be of great support to Mr. Sattele as he leads many new initiatives at MAMS this year.

Please join me in congratulating these three administrators on their new roles and thanking them for always putting students first. We are fortunate to have a team of dedicated administrators District-wide who have devoted their careers in education to serving our students and their families with Blue Raider pride.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lori A. Suski
Superintendent of Schools
